Welcome to Mercante, a cozy Italian trattoria in a hutong, the small alleys of the historical center of Beijing, near the Drum and Bell towers, that since 2012 offers all handmade, home-style, traditional Emilia Romagna food, focusing on high-quality imported Italian ingredients.
Mercante is an old Italian word that means merchant. This name came to our mind from the location we chose to open our cozy trattoria: at the center of a buzzy grocery street-and-shop market right at the cross of some small alleys (Hutong) that are the essence of the Old Beijing. Back in 2012 the location was considered a brave and unconventional one to open a trattoria devoted to quality and authentic Italian flavours.
The design is a mix of the style of classical Italy and communist China: red brick floor, marble table surface give the feeling of classical Italian style- the country root of the cuisine; the pieces of 50s-70s communist Chinese signature lamps, Danwei wooden chairs, big wooden suitcases, wooden doors add the elements of the local country-communist China.
"Handmade, always. Shortcuts, never!" This has been our kitchen motto since day-one and still it is.
We select high quality imported Italian ingredients, follow traditional receipes from Emilia Romagna, the so called "Food Valley" of Italy, and cook an authentic regional cuisine with focus on signature handmade fresh egg pasta (tagliatelle, pappardelle, ravioli, tortelloni), premium quality Italian cheeses and cured meat from small producers. Our brunch menu comes as a great deal set that changes every month to take advantage of the freshest ingredients. It's a good way to have an idea of our cuisine. Our dinner menu comes a-la-carte, is seasonal and enriched by monthly specials. It's the best way to enjoy our food and the atmosphere of Mercante.
Regardless of when you visit us you can trust that our motto will be the same and that all your food, from bread to dessert, will be handmade in our kitchen in the most traditional and authentic Italian way.
When we started to imagine our restaurant we were sure about the wine experience we want to provide: it should be accessible to everyone by offering a friendly priced selection of Italian wines. Strong collaborations with some of the most reliable importers and fair wine pricing policy are our tools to offer to our guests a chance to enjoy a complete Italian dining experience: a good party, tasty food and a bottle of wine on the table!
After five years, with a selection of around 60 labels to represent almost all Italian Regions and many varieties of wine, Mercante is a well known destination for foodies and wine lovers too.
Birthday party, friends reunion, corporate dinner, farewell party and any kind of event that you desire to host in an unconventional and casual setting, suitable for 15 to 50 guests. Seated dinner, standing party, customised menu, special decor and all our team dedicated to make your event a sweet memory.
